The
White Horse is a very attractive 15th century coaching house
where it is reported that Charles I probably drank. The pub is also thought to be
haunted! The building is Grade II listed in the Steyning
conservation area. The White Horse was originally a hotel where
the stage coach left for Brighton. We also housed HM Customs and Excise.
Unfortunately the hotel was burnt down in 1946 but the part left standing was turned into the pub and the stables
were converted to
the function room. In the ladies toilets the old ring for tying up horses
can still be found. The White Horse is covered in ivy and the
traditional black beams just show through. The pub has preiously won both "West Sussex
in Bloom" and the "Steyning in Bloom" competitions, with its mass of hanging
baskets and tubs. Situated at the top of Steyning High Street
opposite the Old Mint, we lie at the bottom of the South
Downs. Steyning is only 7 miles from Worthing, 5 miles from Shoreham (the
nearest beach) and 10 miles from Brighton. This historical town, where
they used to burn witches, is well worth a visit, as is the White Horse
where old traditions are kept alive with events such as Morris dancing! Why not pop in soon.
