An inn of outstanding quality,
Fitzgerald’s led the pub revival in downtown
Sunderland, and it is still a cask ale oasis with a good selection of guest
beers. Near the University, this is a tremendously active venue. There are two
quiz nights a week; Sky Digital big screen television reminds you this is
Stadium of Light country; and the students’ unique “Hat Society” will
surprise the unwittingly bareheaded on Tuesdays. To accommodate the large
numbers of people who head for Fitzgerald’s in the evening, there’s a large
open plan drinking area in late Victorian/Art Deco style and a more relaxed
Chart Room with a nautical feel. A beer garden, good food and a “children
welcome” policy add to its broad appeal.
