Crown
Posada is one of the most famous pubs in the North East, where natives of
Newcastle bring visitors to get an instant blast of city life. The atmosphere of
debate, laughter and beer in full flood is intensified by the pub’s unique
shape - narrow, deep and high - into which simultaneously talking Geordies of
every caste cheerfully cram themselves. As you hold on to your pint of one of
six ales on offer there’s much to hold your gaze: elaborate plasterwork,
carved bar, panelled entrance to the sanctuary of the snug, stained glass
windows and the enigmatic crown symbol (the story that the pub was bought by a
Spanish Sea Captain for his mistress is just one legend). The only entertainment
is renewing or making friendships. The only music comes from the jazz LP’s on
an old record player. This is a great jumping off (and back again) place for the
Quayside round the corner. A real bar.
