The Number 9 ale brewed exclusively for the Bodega by Mordue is a clue
you’ve arrived at Newcastle’s Number 1 traditional ale pub. A visit before
or after a game at nearby St. James’s Park (or on digital satellite TV) will
leave you in no doubt - with three sets of pumps at the long bar and a swift and
obliging staff to keep a satisfying selection of beers flowing. But this big,
beautiful and historic pub repays a visit any time. Two of the drinking areas
have a stained glass dome above elaborately tiled floors, a reminder of
Victorian days when the pub proudly brewed its own ales. From a Saturday chip
butty to a business lunch of two main courses prepared from fresh ingredients,
the food is notable. And so is the welcome.
