The
Royal Oak is one of the most famous pubs in Cardiff,
situated just off the A48 which runs from Chepstow to Carmarthen.
It is a 15 minute walk to the town centre and you will pass seven pubs
on the way which makes it a good circuit pub. Built towards the
end of the 19th Century, this listed building originally hosted a boxing ring on one of the
upper floors so the pub has a collection of boxing photographs covering large parts
of the bar walls. Tommy Dwyer and Steve Curtis in one such photo lived
in nearby Beresford Road. The Welsh Harriers also first ran from this
pub in 1896. Inside has a traditional style with
great character and is well
maintained. It has recently had it’s 200 year old windows restored. There are
many other original features including the architraves, marble tops to the
rear of the serving area and both lounges have their original fireplaces.
Fabulous leaded windows separate the lounge and bar and
there are high backed Church-like pews, traditional tables and chairs
around, some about 70 years old, which were restored in 2007. The
pub attracts a very cosmopolitan mix of customers along with many
regular locals who come for a friendly welcome from a traditional pub
which serves good pub food. Renowned for the quality of our
real ale which is gravity fed and served straight from the barrel, people
will come just for the our real ale! As well as being a focal point for the
boxing community, we host live music twice a week with karaoke disco once a
week and a charity
raising bikers club meet here monthly. Why not call in soon for a
tasty meal or a quality pint. You will be made very welcome.
