Coach & Horses Inn PhotoCoach & Horses Inn is a 16th Century Coaching House situated on Welsh Street in the rural Welsh border town of Chepstow.  Picture your perfect olde worlde pub and this is it!   Look out for the windows and you are literally a stones throw away from the castle and this is the nearest pub to the racecourse, ¾ mile away.  Outside this black and white pub there are hanging baskets in the summer time and our beer garden is totally walled and decorated with flowers, flower boxes etc. giving a perfect ambience to those summer evenings.  We have an award winning covered smoking area with heating, lighting, music and seats, plus a bar.  This pub is steeped in history.  The walls were originally made from stones taken from the castle, as were many houses in Monmouthshire. Between 1680 – 1710 anyone was allowed to take what they liked from the castle, so the stone and tiles in the pub area are from there.  We also have old oak timbers from the major naval shipyard used throughout the Inn, including the low beams.  Lawrence of Arabia, who was orphaned, lived next to the pub so this was his local when he visited home.  This is an interesting place to stay as we have a resident ghost who regular ghost hunters have named Sarah Chambers who died in 1820.  Today our accommodation is popular with walkers and cyclists, travelling the local bike trail with its stunning views.   This family run pub is proud of its delicious food created by Nick, a trained chef  and Sheila, an excellent self-taught chef.  All meals are homemade including the pies, with the produce bought from local farms and butchers specialising in Wye Valley sausages.  We tend to sell wines we know best and have a list of South African wines where Ian and Sheila have visited the vineyards and tasted and chosen the varieties.  When the  Annual Chepstow Beer & Cider Festival is on we have live entertainment and Morris dancers all weekend.  With so much happening here, why not travel a little out of your way to sample this lovely venue and meet our two beautiful Yorkshire terriers, Henry and Gerti!

When you visit the pub please let the staff know you have seen it on Pub Explorer.
