OUR HISTORY
NATIONAL BREWER OF
WALES
S.A. Brain & Co Ltd. has grown from
being Cardiff's own brewer into "The National Brewer of Wales"
over the last 100 years.
The present day company brings together a
combined heritage of over 600 years of South Wales brewing tradition. The
Old Brewery, which is currently awaiting re-development, on St. Mary
Street in the heart of Cardiff's city centre was founded in 1713. In
1882 it was purchased by Samuel Arthur Brain and his uncle Joseph Benjamin
Brain. The company has remained in the family ownership ever since
and the present chairman is a direct descendant of one of the founders.
In 1997 the company purchased South Wales'
other leading independent brewery Crown Buckley which had been formed from
the merger of the Crown brewery of Pontyclun with the famous Buckleys
brewery of Llanelli, founded in 1767. Today the full range of Brains
and Buckleys ales are still produced in the traditional manner at the
company's Cardiff brewery which is a familiar city centre landmark with
its chimney rising up beside Cardiff central station. The company
operates over 200 pubs across South Wales and the West Country and within
Cardiff's city centre it has a venue to suit everyone's taste by both day
and night.

for the people of Cardiff and the Valleys of South Wales and has become
Brains' best-selling beer. A regular winner of Brewery Industry
International Awards.

TASTING NOTES
A skilful blend of dark and chocolate malts, gives this rich dark mild a
full fine flavour. The beer has a delicate hop and chocolate aroma while
the palate starts malty with a slight nuttiness, but then gives way to a
light dry finish.
BACKGROUND
Brains Dark was for many years the original mainstay of the Brains product
range, and rapidly became an important part of Cardiff everyday life. A
distinctive ale which is non-cloying, it is easier to drink than many
other mild ales. Although Brains Dark has retained its place in the hearts
of the people of the capital city, it has found favour much further afield
and is now a popular and welcome guest beer around the country. A
reputation with cask ale enthusiasts is reflected in the current CAMRA
award "Champion Mild of Wales".
