The Campaign for Real Ale must be one of
the most effective campaigning organizations in Britain. It was
formed in 1971 at which time the large companies which controlled
the industry saw the benefits to themselves of selling lager instead of
Real Ale. It was easier to dispense and had a longer shelf
life. There was a massive promotion of lager which meant sale of
Real Ale was in serious decline. CAMRA was formed as a reaction to
this situation to promote the benefits of Real Ale.
CAMRA is an independent voluntary
consumer organization with 60,000 members. Membership is open to
all individuals but not corporate entities such as breweries or
pubs. Its aims are to :-
