There are no new carpets at the
Yew Tree, no bar meals and there are no fancy
alcopops on sale. But Landlord Alan East is succeeding where others in Staffordshire
have failed and he won his way into the millennium edition of the Good Pub Guide with the title 'collectors pub of the year'.
It is the 18th year
running the 300 year old Yew Tree, at
Cauldon, near leek, has been listed in the
guide. And it is partly thanks to the eccentric landlords passion for collecting
antiques. A self confessed hoarder who still has all his childhood Dinky toys,
63 year old Alan has turned the pub into a living museum full of Victoriana.
Music at the yew tree is not from a jukebox, but from working Symphonions which
customers can enjoy for 2p. The till is pre-decimal and drinkers perch on old
settles and soggily sprung sofas. Alan's fascinating hoard of old treasure has brought
him customers from around the globe. Where else can you get drunk in a museum?
Four darts teams and a crib team mean the bar is bustling most nights and
regulars can always rely on Alan for a lift home. The pub has genuine character,
the landlord is friendly and the beer is well kept.
