The King William IV is located in the heart of the village, close to its
large attractive green complete with cricket pitch and church, an excellent
unspoilt village local that dates back to the 16th century and boasts an
intriguing history. It was originally a chapel, providing a resting place for
weary pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. On acquiring its license in the 18th
century it soon became one of the haunts of the infamous Hawkhurst gang, a wild
band of smugglers who terrorised the area. Nowadays, the two character bars are frequented by a pleasant mix of locals
and passing trade. The relaxing up market rustic style lounge bar boasts a huge
with farmhouse kitchen tables. By
contrast the splendidly traditional public bar is smaller and more basic with
exposed floorboards. With Cask ales served on a hand pumps.
