Crown Inn PhotoThe Crown Inn is a free house with traditional style and service. It is also a member of CAMRA guest ales. There is a full wine list including six house wines available by the glass. There is a wide menu choice including vegetarian meals and daily specials. Booking is advisable from Thursday to Sunday. The crown inn is 5 minutes from Colchester town center but not in a high residential area. There is a large award winning garden with children's playhouse and BBQs in the summer.  A 24 cover restaurant is available for private parties or meetings usually at no extra cost.  The Crown Inn boasts a full and varied history. The original building dates back to the 1600's and parts have been added since. Now with two dining areas, a public bar & games room, and a family garden for the summer months the Crown is one of Colchester's finest pubs. Situated in the charming Lexden area of town the Crown has enjoyed patronage from a wide variety of visitors. There is always talk of the resident ghost who, although shy, has appeared occasionally on a Saturday evening.  Sports celebrities such as Trevor Brooking and Bobby George have enjoyed a pint in the friendly atmosphere and regulars even drank for years next to an unexploded bomb!  On July 25 1995 some very serious people came and took away what had been the pub's door stop for the previous 6 years - an artillery shell. Everyone had assumed it had been decommissioned after being ploughed up in an Essex field. Everyone except the bomb disposal squad that is.  A few hours later there was an almighty, but safe, bang. Thanks to one of the regulars, the Crown now has a defused replacement shell and the proprietors, can sleep safely at night.  The exterior of the pub has claimed much attention as well by winning a handful of beer garden and floral display awards including winning the Ridley's in Bloom award and winning the Colchester in Bloom competition in 1999.  So whether it's a fire side meal in winter or a summer drink in the garden every one will enjoy their visit to The Crown Inn. Exit the A12 for central Colchester take the third exit at the roundabout. Go up the hill to the junction the Crown Inn will be found on the left.
