The signpost outside the Bull
Inn shows Newick to be almost exactly a halfway
point on the old Pilgrim route between Canterbury and Winchester. Established
nearly 500 years ago, in 1510 just after Henry VIII was crowned. The Bull Inn
served as a resting place between the two cities.
There have been many changes over the centuries, a major alteration in the late
16th century extended the building to the east giving more or less the shape
seen today. The interior has been sympathetically renovated to keep as near as
possible to the original state. The low ceilings, featuring wonderful oak beams,
are held up by a number of original oak pillars. Adjoining the bar area is a
large restaurant occupying the site of the old milking parlour. We can be found
on the A272 at Newick.
