The
Horse & Chains
is easily accessible by car or bus in Sparrows
Herne, Bushey. Historically the earliest reference to the pub was in
1698 when it was known as 'the two cottages at the stump'. The stump
referred to the tethering post where the horses were rested. Located
halfway up a hill the horses would be watered and rested while the coachmen
and passengers partook of a pint! Dick Turpin apparently stayed here
in 1742. The stable, barn and horse trough were removed in1938 after
the last horse, Old Poll, was retired to pasture. All open
plan, the bar offers a comfortable environment which has quite low ceilings,
old wooden beams and a cosy log fire. With comfy seating this is the
place to enjoy just a drink or a cup of coffee, read the papers and maybe
take advantage of our wireless internet access. From the smart,
informal restaurant you can watch your meal being prepared through a hatch
into the kitchen. Food is all freshly prepared using seasonal produce
with regularly changing menus, offering plenty of choice with a variety of
dishes to suit all tastes. Children's portions are available and the
options from the bar menu are ideal for the younger ones. It is well
worth travelling from further afield to come and enjoy this very hospitable
pub and restaurant. We hope to see you very soon.
