The Volunteer is to be found in Ventnor and is the smallest
pub on the Isle of Wight. It is a very good example of what pubs used
to be like - a place to enjoy a good quality pint and a conversation without
the modern day distractions of TVs, fruit machines and the like. Built
in 1866, the first license was applied for in 1871 when a Cornelius Giles
started selling beer to his neighbours. Today we are recognised by CAMRA
and have received many local pub of the year awards. We are one of the few
venues where the traditional Isle of Wight game, 'rings', is still played.
We have a good local regulars clientele and attract a fair number of
visitors who are in the know. Make sure you, too, visit us next time
you come over from the mainland. This is a treat not to be missed!
