St.
Stephen's Tavern is the closest pub to Big Ben situated on
the corner of a cobbled street in the centre of London where Churchill used to take a tipple.
Today we attract journalists, paparazzi and
lesser known back benchers to drink with us, as well as Neil
Kinnock! When people are being interviewed around this area they
often use
us as the back drop, filming Big Ben through the window. We have a division bell
which rings giving a warning sign that there is two minutes to vote. This very traditional pub, built in 1873, was refurbished in 2003 after
15 years of being closed. Many of the original fittings had been
stored since closure and now brought back to use! There is a real
wow factor, particularly for sightseers, with it's interior design and
carpets which are the same design as that of parliament.
Historically, Benjamin Disraeli, twice Prime
Minister in the 1800's, was one of the founding members of the St Stephens Gentleman's
Club established in 1870 which was held downstairs. Today we serve
good quality pub food with table service whenever possible. There
is an excellent selection of real ales which are served to perfection,
The Mezzanine area is available for gatherings of up to 30 people.
This is arguably the best pub in London,
giving genuine hospitality. Come and try us next time you're in London. |
