Rose & Crown PhotoThe Rose & Crown is a very well known destination food house situated in the village of Wick on the main A420.  Wick Gorge has long being a noted beauty spot and was visited by Beau Nash in the 18th Century and mentioned by Jane Austin in her novel  Northanger Abbey. Golden valley walk really beautiful.  We hope you will notice the full character of your surrounding's and you are right to think we have a story to tell. This listed building dates back to 1640 and was once occupied by John Gulley, the first bare knuckle fighter in the country.  He became champion of England in 1807 and retired to begin making a remarkable climb up the economical ladder after becoming a stud & race horse owner.  Being a millionaire tycoon he bought a whole series of collieries in Durham as well as being MP for Pontefract for four years.  In and amongst this he managed to father twenty four children with two wives and died a very wealthy and popular man. Today there is a traditional ambience with real log fires blazing in the winter and candle lit table service in the evenings!  Nooks and crannies give people space to enjoy their own personal group. Sit on our very pretty patio which is bathed in sunshine in the Summer.  Like all Chef & Brewer pubs we employ high quality Chefs who have superb kitchen facilities.  The food can be chosen from a main menu with specials including including fish dishes and homemade desserts.  You will be served meals which have been prepared from the freshest of ingredients and cooked to order.   To complement your meal there is an extensive choice of quality wines or real ales which are served to the highest standard if preferred.  Our reputation goes before us so make sure you arrive early to taste something really special!

When you visit the pub please let the staff know you have seen it on Pub Explorer.
