OLD ENGLISH INNS

|
|
ABOUT
US |
|
This historic 15th century
coaching inn is set in the picturesque market town of Stony Stratford.
The Cock Hotel rose to national importance as the official staging post
for the famous Manchester Flier, which took a 25-minute stop at The Cock
for dinner. Other travellers staying at the hotel and The Bull opposite
vied with each other in the telling of outrageous ‘tales of the road’,
from whence the famous phrase ‘Cock and Bull story’ derives. |

The
Cock Hotel is set in the beautiful
location of Stony Stratford, which itself is steeped in history. It has
plenty of community spirit and local events go on here throughout the
year. We are ideally situated on the old A5 road between London and
the North. Originally the Cock Hotel was an old Coaching Inn dating
back to the 1490's and because of its location was a popular stop off
point for travellers. The
Cock Hotel and next door Bull Hotel are the originators of the 'Cock &
Bull' story. Travellers
would stay here and tales of their visit would be passed on which eventually
became known as another Cock & Bull story.
Also the writer of 'Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross' came from
here and the rhyme originated as horses hired from
the Cock Hotel were often ridden to Banbury.
Delicious cuisine is freshly prepared from our own
main menu with a bar and accompanying snack menu
also on offer. We have a superior wine list
and a range of speciality coffees such as cappuccino
and espresso to finish. Should you need a
place to stay we have 31 comfortable en-suite rooms,
each with individual character, all having mod cons.
We are a popular venue for all special occasions
including wedding receptions, dinner dances,
birthdays and anniversaries. There are 2
function facilities with ample space for up to 150
guests. Full
conference facilities are available for corporate
meetings, team building exercises, etc. At the
Cock Hotel, if you come to dine, stay or just have a
drink you will always receive a warm, friendly
welcome from helpful staff ensuring a most enjoyable
visit. |
