Have you yet noticed the full
character of your surroundings? You're right to think we have a story to
tell. Parts of this fine inn, with its low beamed ceilings, date back
many centuries, although exactly when it was first built is lost in the mist
of time. One clue is the name of the inn itself, "The Star" as a pub
name dates from the 15th century, referring to the star of Bethlehem.
Interestingly, the site itself was first occupied in 410AD, in the late
Roman period. Sitting on the main Toddington to Luton road, apart from the
regular customers who would have been agricultural workers from around the
area, travellers would have made up a fair proportion of the clientele.
Strawplaiting was a common occupation in the area from the 1700's onwards,
the straw being purchased from the market in Luton. Many a
strawplaiter's husband (for it was mainly women who did this work) would
stop with their bundles of straw, for a jar of ale after visiting Luton
market. Local farmers off to market were also counted among the
customers, as were more wealthy clientele, moving between Toddington and
Luton on business and pleasure. Generally though, The Star lived a
sleepy existence until the coming of the motor car. The choice of
hand-pulled fine ales and wines are better today than ever before, and the
quality of our food is outstanding. Chalkboards on the walls display a
host of dishes created and prepared by a team of skilled chefs using
the finest ingredients. But whatever you choose the same enthusiasm
and commitment will be put into creating the prefect dish. You will
find details of our choices of starters & main courses on menus on your
table. And a selection of chefs specials on our chalkboards around the
pub. To place your order, simply choose a table then order whatever
you would like to eat and drink from the bar then leave the rest to us.
WE WANT TO YOU FEEL TRULY AT HOME.
