The Crown
offers a friendly welcome with knowledgeable staff. Although the name Scissett would not be out of place in the Doomsday
Book, the present community traces its origins to the early 18th century when a
local mill owner began to build houses to accommodate his workers. St. Augustines
Church was built in the 1830s and consecrated in 1839. Traditionally, the villagers found
employment in either the woollen industry or the Yorkshire coalfields.
Both industries
have now almost completely disappeared locally. However, Scissetts location,
together with easy access to Leeds, Sheffield or Manchester makes it a convenient base for
commuters, and the village has grown considerably since the 1960s. Former mill premises
have been turned into manufacturing and retail units, and the latter are well worth a
visit. Other local attractions include the Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park, not forgetting the Yorkshire Mining Museum. Pleasant walks maybe taken
along the Dearne Valley or in the surrounding hills.
